The Self Made Midwife Business Drop-In

A professional conversation for midwives who know there may be more than one way to practise midwifery.

You don't need another webinar telling you the NHS is under pressure.
You already know that.

What you may be questioning is whether the future you want inside this profession exists somewhere beyond the traditional path.

If you've found yourself repeatedly returning to the idea of independent practice, wondering what might be possible, or asking yourself whether there could be another way to use the skills you've spent years developing, this conversation is for you.

This is not a webinar.
It's not a motivational talk.

Most midwives never seriously consider independent practice.
They qualify.
They find a job.
They follow the pathway that has been laid out in front of them.
But some midwives keep returning to the same question.

What if there is another way to practise?

Not because they care less about midwifery.
Because they care too much to ignore the question.

They begin noticing independent midwives online.

They listen to podcasts.
They read articles.
They look at websites.

Not because they are collecting information.
Because they are trying to work out whether a different future inside the profession might be possible for them.

And once that question appears, it rarely disappears.

Who is this for

This session is for midwives who are no longer asking whether independent practice exists.

They're asking whether it could work for them.

You may still be working within the NHS.

You may be newly qualified.

You may be returning to practice.

You may already have a website, social media accounts or membership of an independent midwifery organisation.

What matters isn't where you are starting.

What matters is that you are actively exploring whether you want to build something of your own.

The midwives who attend these sessions are often experienced and highly capable.

What they lack isn't clinical knowledge.

What they lack is a realistic understanding of how independent careers are actually built.

Because becoming an independent midwife and building an independent business are not the same thing.

Many midwives spend months focusing on websites, branding, social media and services before they fully understand how independent businesses grow.

Others assume that joining an independent midwifery organisation automatically solves the business side of the equation.

The result is often frustration, unnecessary expense and a great deal of activity that doesn't move them any closer to the future they want.

This session is designed to help you understand what matters first, what can wait until later and where your time and energy are best invested.

Independent practice is not a refuge for midwives who are simply fed up with the NHS and looking for a way out.

The most successful independent midwives are not running away from something.

They are moving towards something.

A different way of practising.
A different relationship with their clients.
A different vision for their future.

And mindset does really matter.

Because building an independent business requires a very different way of thinking from working within an employed role.

Your Host

Linda Lilwall

Founder, The Self Made Midwife

Linda has worked in midwifery for almost four decades and has run her own independent midwifery practice since 2008.

After many years within the NHS, she chose a different path and built a successful independent practice supporting families through pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period.

Today, alongside her clinical work, she mentors midwives who want greater autonomy, flexibility and professional satisfaction without walking away from the profession they trained so hard to join.

Her work combines real-world independent midwifery experience, practical business knowledge and an honest understanding of what independent practice looks like behind the scenes.
