Build Independent Midwifery in the Correct Professional Order

A rigorously structured, mentored route into safe and sustainable practice - without guesswork, overwhelm, or costly wrong turns.

The Self Made Midwife Method™

A 10-week mentorship pathway designed to support you in transitioning from NHS Midwifery to building your own independent midwifery practice.

This is for you if…

You already know something no longer fits.

You’re not debating whether to leave the NHS.

You’re asking a different question now:

“How do I do this properly?”

Whether you’re an experienced midwife, newly qualified, or approaching registration, the issue isn’t desire.

It’s sequence.

You want to practise with integrity, autonomy and continuity.

But you also want:

- Compliance
- Protection
- Financial clarity
- A route you can defend professionally

Because leaving without structure isn’t freedom.

The Self Made Midwife Method ™ is not about escaping the NHS.

It is about building independent midwifery in the correct professional order - so it becomes safe, sustainable, and aligned with who you are as a midwife.

Not louder.

Not reckless.

Structured

"There is more than one way to be an exceptional midwife."

" I’m  blown away by how amazing this programme has been! I was unsure on what it would involve before I started but now wonder how any IM manages without Linda’s guidance!

The structure and support from Linda helped me move from thinking about clients to actually securing them. Everything felt possible, not overwhelming.”

What You’ll Achieve

The mentorship programme guides you to clarify how you want to practise as an independent midwife, build a professional values-led business structure, communicate your services confidently and authentically, and implement systems that remove uncertainty and second-guessing.

By the end, you won’t just have ideas - you will have a working business framework you can trust.

How the Programme Works

10 weeks · Small cohort · Live mentorship

The programme runs over 10 weeks with a small, intentionally held cohort to ensure every participant receives individual attention.

This is business mentorship from a midwife who has been there, learned what works, and built a programme to fast-track your independent practice with confidence. You are not expected to have everything figured out at once, and you will not be pushed faster than is right for you.

It has been THE most useful thing for me with regards to setting up my IM practise.

Linda has been very supportive and I have had more support than I thought possible. I would never have got going without this mentorship.

I really valued the rich programme content which is an absolute goldmine of information.

Linda is a fantastic mentor, her ability to meet me without judgement , paired with her deep knowledge across so many areas has really inspired me to build on my independent practice as a newly qualified Midwife. I also felt the power of the “hive mind” community which kept the programme energy high and inspirational.

Darcy Fox

Thank you so much Linda, I wouldn’t be where I am without the skills and confidence that you have shared with me after the closure of Private Midwives.

I cannot thank you enough for giving me the confidence to forge ahead despite the challenges, and the group are all so wonderfully supportive of each other.

Corinne Price

As a NQM, I was anxious about starting my career as an IM, so joined the course looking for clarity and confidence. I found both of these things, but importantly, I also found a community.

The support offered by Linda and her team, as well as the other members in the cohort, has been second to none. I finished the course knowing my value and seeing a much clearer path ahead.

Helen Colman

Hi, I’m Linda,

I didn’t create this mentorship from theory - it’s built from lived experience.

I’m an independent midwife with decades of NHS and private practice behind me, and I’ve built a sustainable, values-led business from the ground up.

I know what it’s like to love midwifery deeply and still feel professionally constrained.
I also know how to step out of that properly - with structure, compliance, and integrity.

The Self Made Midwife Method exists because too many capable midwives are trying to navigate this transition alone.

I don’t teach shortcuts or sell hype.

I offer calm, grounded guidance for midwives ready to build independent practice carefully and ethically.

How This Works

This work is not about shortcuts or templates.

It is mentorship, a structured method, and professional scaffolding designed to support safe, confident independent practice - built with judgement, compliance, and sustainability in mind.

There are no promises of overnight success.

What you gain instead is clarity, correct sequencing, and a professional route into independent practice that is built carefully and properly.

By the End of 10 Weeks

You will have a clear, independent midwifery model, confident messaging and positioning, robust documentation and systems, a structured continuity pathway, ongoing support via your Content Companion, and a complete, values-led business framework. You will know what you are offering, who it is for, and how to communicate it with clarity and calm.

Frequently Asked Questions?

How is the "The Self Made Midwife Method" different from other courses?

Unlike generic business courses, this programme is tailored specifically to midwives transitioning to independent practice. It combines mentorship, community support, and actionable steps to get you from burnout to a thriving practice.

How much time does the course take to complete?

Most midwives spend around 5–7 hours per week engaging with the content, applying it to their own context, and beginning to shape the foundations of their practice. This isn’t a “watch once and done” kind of course.
It’s designed to support real decision-making and responsible setup — which means reflection, not rush.
You won’t be buried in busywork or long lectures.
Each module is structured to give you exactly what you need, with space to think, apply, and integrate as you go.

What if I don’t have the time right now?

This is built for working midwives.
Each Core Theme is paced with capacity in mind - not urgency.
This isn’t a race. It’s a build.

Will I have lifetime access to the programme materials?

Yes, you’ll have lifetime access to all course materials, templates, and resources. You can revisit the content whenever you need a refresher or want to implement new strategies.

I’m worried about the cost…

I get it. This isn’t a small decision.

But what I’ve seen over and over is this:

  • Trying to figure it all out alone takes longer, costs more, and creates more risk.
  • The Method saves you time, stress, and missteps and protects your energy long term.

How much can I earn as an independent midwife?

Earnings depend on your location, services offered, and pricing strategy.

Many independent midwives earn incomes comparable to or exceeding their NHS salary while working fewer hours and achieving better work-life balance.

Earning six figures is also highly achievable once your business is established

What about my NHS pension and saving for retirement.

Your NHS pension is deferred, meaning it will remain in the NHS scheme and grow with inflation until you claim it at the normal retirement age.

Many Independent practitioners often set up private pensions or SIPPs, balancing these savings with increased earning potential. This way many independent midwives achieve financial stability and secure retirement through proper financial planning.

Can I join if I’m still working in the NHS?

Absolutely. The programme is designed to help you transition gradually, allowing you to balance your NHS role while building your independent practice.

What will my colleagues or managers think about me leaving the NHS?

Leaving the NHS is a deeply personal decision. Many midwives in the programme report that their former colleagues understand and even admire their decision to prioritise their well-being and passion for woman-centred care.

How will I find clients as an independent midwife?

Finding clients might feel daunting, but the programme includes proven strategies for client acquisition. From leveraging social media to creating a referral network, you’ll learn how to connect with the families who need your services most.

What if I fail?

Fear of failure is normal, but the program is designed to minimise risk by providing a clear, step-by-step plan. You’ll also have ongoing support from the community and mentorship to address challenges as they arise.

I’m scared of getting it wrong legally or professionally…

Good. That means you’re taking this seriously. This isn’t about selling services. It’s about safe, ethical, lawful practice. Inside the programme, we walk through the legal, structural, and regulatory layers step by step — so nothing gets missed or muddled.

How can I manage my work-life balance while building a new practice?

Independent midwifery gives you the freedom to set boundaries and design your schedule. I’ll teach you how to manage your time effectively, ensuring you can focus on both your personal life and professional goals.

Do I need insurance to work as an independent midwife?

Yes, insurance is essential for independent practice.

In the programme, we guide you through selecting the right coverage and understanding your responsibilities so you can practice with confidence and peace of mind.

Do I need to register with the CQC (Care Quality Commission)?

In most circumstances, no — unless you are practising from a clinic or have other midwives working in your team. Inside the programme, you’ll get guidance on how to assess whether registration applies to your specific setup, and what to do if it does.

How do I price my services?

Pricing can feel tricky, but the programme walks you through how to set fees that reflect your expertise, cover your costs, and align with market demand. You’ll also learn how to communicate your value to clients.

What about legal and accounting regulations?

We’ll cover the basics of managing your finances as an independent practitioner, including setting up systems for bookkeeping, understanding self-assessment tax returns, and working with an accountant if needed.

You’ll need clear contracts for your services to protect both yourself and your clients. The program includes templates and guidance on creating legally sound agreements.
